Hump Day Link Love

March 5th, 2008

2 more days until the weekend, 2 more days until the weekend……

In the mean time, some carnival linkage to keep you entertained.

BeingFrugal hosted the Carnival of Money Hacks #2 and my most recent budgeting blunder was included. Within the carnival, the following posts caught my eye:

  • PT tosses out the idea of using only cash for a week. Cash + me = money disaster. It may work for those who have spending problems with debit cards; but, I like the accountability of seeing each transaction come out of my bank account.
  • My Dollar Plan reviews cash back credit cards for gasoline. I’ve been using a Shell Mastercard since I started driving. I wonder if there’s anyway to find the total amount of money I’ve saved. I do know that I’ve been averaging $8.50 over the last few months.

Then, the BagLady hosted the Carnival of Personal Finance. It was a nice surprise to see my comparison of UltraRunning and Personal Finance as an editor’s pick.

Being a mathematics / statistics geek, I found The Financial Engineer’s rundown of our peak earning years to be extremely interesting.

Carnival Madness!

February 12th, 2008

My last post, Keep the Changes vs. Chase Cash Back, was tagged in the 122th Festival of Frugality Carnival.

An assortment of quality posts made the cut and I found the following to be of interest.

  1. Free Money Finance gives some tips on reducing vet bills.Commentary: My canine companion enrolled in Banfield’s Wellness Plan which costs $21.95 / month of $263.40 / year. That’s before on another $120 for heart worm medication, $80 for flea & ticket protection, $30 for toothpaste which brings my total to $493.40; still underneath the average and my dog is covered in just about every case. The Wellness Plan is still way cheaper than what I would pay for shots at a ‘normal’ vet/
  2. Finance Blog came up with some ways to save for a first mortgage deposit.Commentary: Solid advice. I don’t live with my parents nor do I have a roommate. The parents live in another state and I’ve never been able to find a compatible roommate. Not many people my age, early 20’s, can handle dealing with a roommate that’s in bed by 10:00pm and up by 4:00 am; add in a crazy dog and the pickings are slim.
  3. Debt-free Revolution saves some money on vehicle maintenance.Commentary: Owning a vehicle rocks, as does doing your own car repairs. After 15 years and 200,000+ miles, my truck still runs like new. Consistent preventative maintenance has helped minimize repair costs. Last year, I spent a total of $412.86 on car-related expenses. (excluding gas) I doubt you can find a new car for less.
